When I first started homeschooling, I thought I was doing something radical – leaving the system to give my kids a better way to learn.

But what I didn’t realize was that I’d carried the system home with me. The schedules, the checklists, the guilt when we didn’t “start on time.” I left school… but school hadn’t left me.

Breaking up with public-school thinking changed everything – and if you’re feeling exhausted or constantly second-guessing yourself, it might be the shift you need too.

Why This Mindset Shift Matters

Homeschooling is about freedom. But you can’t experience that freedom if you’re still measuring success by the same rules the system used – grades, hours, test scores, and comparison.
When you try to win by those rules, you end up tired, doubtful, and frustrated. Because you’re trying to win a game you’re not even playing anymore.

“You didn’t choose homeschooling to be a teacher in your kitchen. You chose it to be a parent who teaches from the heart.”

Signs You Might Still Be Stuck in “School Thinking”

  • You panic when your kids finish early – because school was supposed to last seven hours.
  • You think every lesson needs a worksheet or written proof.
  • You feel guilty when learning looks like play.
  • You’re afraid you’re “behind”… but behind what, exactly?
If any of these sound familiar, you’re not failing – you’re just unlearning.

How to Actually Unlearn

1. Decompress – for real. Take a month (or even three) to rest, play, and reconnect. You can’t hear your own intuition while you’re still listening for bells.
2. Redefine learning. Ask yourself each day: Did we connect? Did we learn something real? Did we enjoy being together? That’s your new progress report.
3. Notice the fruit, not the form. Reading under a tree, listening to podcasts in the car, baking bread – it’s all learning. The best lessons don’t always have grades.
4. Re-parent your own school mindset. When you feel the urge to control, pause and ask: Is this about their learning… or my need for proof?
5. Create new measures of success. Peaceful mornings. Curious kids. Confident choices. Family connection. Those are the grades that actually matter.

Final Encouragement

Breaking up with public-school thinking isn’t rebellion – it’s renewal. It’s what lets your homeschool become less about performance and more about purpose.

And the best part? You don’t have to do it alone.

Why This Podcast Exists

Homeschooling can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re totally new to it. As a former public school teacher who made the leap to homeschooling, I created this podcast to:

  • Support and encourage moms like you who are considering or just starting to homeschool
  • Provide practical advice to make home education easier.
  • Foster a community of moms navigating the homeschooling journey together
